William Shakespeare wrote the original "perfect storm" with The Tempest, his last meditation of the journey through life. On November 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9, the RPI Players will present their production of this classic tale of redemption, forgiveness and rejuvenation. Prospero, usurped from power in Milan by his brother Antonio and Alonso, king of Naples, has found safety for himself and his daughter Miranda on an almost deserted island somewhere in the Mediterranean. Here he can pursue his study of the higher forms of power (as opposed to the art of "magick" practiced by the sorcerers and witches). He has taken in Caliban, son of Sycorax, an exiled witch, and he has freed Ariel, a spirit of the air, imprisoned by Sycorax for twelve years. Now Prospero finds that royal ships sailing from Africa to Naples will pass near his island and he uses his powers to strand many of his former enemies. As a master in a game of strategy, he watches as his brother and the king, along with an old friend (Gonzalo) and the king's younger brother (Sebastian) are set on one part of the island, a steward (Stephano) and a jester (Trinculo) meet with Caliban, and the king's son (Ferdinand) is brought face to face with the now grown Miranda. There are plots and counterplots. And there is magic. |
